Date formatting is one but are there others?

If Killink CSV did support cell formatting, and I'm not saying it will, certain limitations would have to exist. For instance, the formatting would be used to change the cell value, not just the display of the value. And format settings would not be saved after the file is closed due to the fact that delimited text files have no place to store format information.

I have been hesitant to add cell formatting because it can lead to unsuspecting changes to the raw data. To avoid unsuspecting changes, if formatting were added, it would be a manual action performed by the user and not something performed automatically like many of the spreadsheet programs do. In other words, the user would have to select the cells to format, specify the new format in some type of popup window, then apply the new format to the selected cells by clicking an OK or Apply button. Something along those lines that is.

I'll add the requested feature to the list and consider it for a future release based on user demand.

Thanks again for the feedback.

Regards,
-KIRBY

RE: Format cells?

For what I am using the software for, cell formatting would be useful, especially for dates

Format cells?

Starting with Killink CSV v1.2 add cell values are formatted as text. This is a change from previous versions which used a general format similar to the one found in Excel.

The problem with the general format is that certain values are displayed in a format different then the format used in the actual file. For example, using the general format the value 01970 is displayed as 1970. Notice the leading zero is removed. With a text format the value 01970 is displayed as 01970. Changing to the text format means you will see the value as it is found in the file, which in my opinion is a good thing.

This leads me to the question, do you want the ability to change the format of cells?

I see some advantages to this. For example, by allowing formatting you could easily convert dates from a Month Day Year format to Year Month Day. Is this something Killink CSV users would find useful?

-KIRBY
