Timeout

There appears to be no way to increase/decrease the timeout value (which appears to be 60 seconds).

The undefined "301: Timeout" error might possibly be addressed by increasing the timeout.

Also, what is the meaning of "301: Timeout" ??

Help with Exchange server

I recently installed a new exchange server and I am trying to relay my mail through my ISP's SMTP server. I have set up Exchange's SMTP connector to use "mail.bellsouth.net" as a Smart Host. All my mail is stuck in the outbound queue and is not being accepted by Bellsouth.

When I run your SMTP Diagnostics, the mail goes right out. Doesn't the SMTP Diagnostics program use the SMTP connector on the Exchange server to send the test? Has anyone experienced problems with the Bellsouth SMTP server?

SMTP Diag Suggestion

When testing multiple paths to a mail server (such as through different MX hosts), it would be nice if the log output of the diagnostic report timed each request/response and listed them in the log.

Error 301 Interrupted - Can't find anywhere

We are having terrible trouble with a client who is seeing delays of several hours for emails having an attachment (1 or 2 mb). If I send direct to their smtp gateway, it works fine. If I send through Postini I get a 301 error every time. I've searched SMTP RFC's and can not find a 301 error for SMTP. Postini also does not know what it means.

Sent message to another client using postini (different MX) and get the same error. Now I'm not sure if it's a problem or not. Anyone?

Cannot create file "SMTPDiag.config"

A number of bug reports have come in recently reporting a cannot create file "SMTPDiag.config" error. The error typically occurs when closing the program. The problem exists only in older versions of SMTP Diagnostics and has been fixed in version 1.7.

I strongly recommend you upgrade your copy of SMTP Diagnostics if you are using an older version. Upgrading is free to all licensed users.

To find out if you have the latest version installed, select Help > Check for Update from the menu.

Does download size matter?

I want to add a command line option to SMTP Diagnostics. Having a duel mode application, one executable for both the GUI and console, is doable but has certain limitations and problems. Therefore, it looks like I need to create two separate executables. [Note: Sun does this with Java (java.exe and javaw.exe) and Microsoft has cscript.exe and wscript.exe.]

With two executables the size of the download will grow, so I'm thinking about using a runtime package that contains the common code. Unfortunately this means I have to use the VCL runtime packages as well. This will reduce the size of the download but it increases the number of files installed.

In your opinion, does size matter or would you rather have a self-contained executable? In other words, do you prefer a smaller download or fewer files?

mail stuck in queue

The diagnostic completes as far as mail queued for delivery, but it just stays stuck in the queue forever. How can I make sure it leaves the building? This is a copy of the report. I'm on a windows XP sp2 machine on a small lan behind a firewall with port 25 open. My local firewall in windows XP is disabled.

Do you have any plans to add SSL support? (both direct and starttls)

I'd also love to see more authentication options such as CRAM MD5, MSN, and NTLM.

A lot of our customers SMTP setups are getting more and more elaborate (because of spam) and these types of features are now required in order to diagnose them properly.

Bug found in Version 1.4

I discovered today the command line program sdcmd.exe does not always exit with a non-zero return code when the test message fails to send. If the test message fails, the return code should be 1. Batch files that use sdcmd.exe can check the ERRORLEVEL to determine success. ERRORLEVEL is 0 when the message sends without error. ERRORLEVEL is 1 when the message fails to send.

I will post a fix for this later today.

It's that time again when I ask the user community what features they want to see in the next release. So what new features would you like to see in version 1.4?

Here is the list the planned 1.4 features:

* Command line support
* File attachments
* Automatically check for updates
* Improved online help and documentation
* Help menu items for obtaining support and access the forums

I also plan to change the trial mode, eliminating the 10 run limit.

Let us know if you have other suggestions for 1.4.

Version 1.3 was released today so that means its time to start thinking about Version 1.4. As of right now, I plan to release Version 1.4 around the end of September. Here are some features planned for the next release:

* Add support for file attachments.
* Save report as HTML.
* Save report as XML.
* Add command line support.

Remove .config file during uninstall (clean install/uninstall).

Version 1.3 should be available by Monday, August 15.

Is it possible to have better organization of the SMTP Diagnositcs Report? For example if I have the SMTP configured for my home ISP while I travel I would like all the reports to go under a certain location, likewise if I testing our different SMTP servers I would like the saved reports to go in another location. Also can you configure it to pick up my dry-cleaning?:P
