Setup/Installation

 

Do I need the .NET Framework? No.  SMTP Diagnostics is a native Windows program.  You do not need to download any additional frameworks or libraries.

 

Can I uninstall SMTP Diagnostics? Yes, absolutely.  While we hope you find SMTP Diagnostics useful we understand it is not needed by everyone.  You can uninstall the program by selecting the Uninstall icon in the SMTP Diagnostics program group or by using the Add/Remove Programs control panel applet.  Please read the help file for step-by-step instructions.

 

 

General Questions

 

Why the name SMTP Diagnostics? The program was originally written to help diagnose client problems when configuring applications to send emails.  Because we used it to diagnose problems related to sending emails through SMTP servers we decided to call it SMTP Diagnostics.  Not the most original name but it works.

 

What is SMTP Diagnostics? SMTP Diagnostics is a Windows program enabling you to send a test email message and view all protocol messages sent between your computer and the outgoing mail server.  Armed with this information you will be able to identify problems and determine resolutions faster saving you time.

 

Who is the typical SMTP Diagnostics user? SMTP Diagnostics was originally designed for programmers and mail server administrators.  However, power users also find SMTP Diagnostics useful.

 

I'm a programmer.  Why do I need SMTP Diagnostics? Not every computer programmer will find SMTP Diagnostics useful.  However, those programmers who are responsible for building email enabled applications will if it useful.  For example, let's say you have developed a web-based application that will send emails to users.  When you deploy the application to the production servers you find that emails are not sent.  Many programmers when faced with this problem will write a program to test the mail server settings.  Those programmers can save time (and money) by using SMTP Diagnostics.  You enter the mail server settings, send a test message, and see each protocol message sent to and received from the outgoing mail server.  Armed with this information, the programmer can quickly diagnose the problem, make the needed changes to the setting, and test again until the test message is successfully sent.

 

 

Security

 

When I load an SMTP profile, I must re-enter my password.  Why? For security reasons we decided not to store the password in the SMTP profile.  We felt people would not be comfortable having the password stored in this file, which can easily be read by opening the file in a text editor such as Notepad.

 

Why not give me the option to store the password? We are considering an option allowing you to store the password as part of the profile.  This option may be provided in a future release if we find there is enough user demand.
